Jonas Burgert: Enigmatic Narrative

Exhibition catalogue for the Denver Art Museum, MCA Denver, Victoria H. Myhren Gallery, and the Logan Collection Vail

From the essay by Christoph Heinrich:
Jonas Burgert draws freely from an arsenal of signs and wonders to create his large-scale compositions. As if he had the entire stock of a municipal theater’s prop department at his disposal, he has heaped and entangled in his paintings formulae and symbols of pathos, selected heraldic motifs and elements from long since vanished cultures. Perhaps you have to love the opera in order to fully appreciate Jonas Burgert’s paintings—that unique fusion of music and text, image and atmosphere, character and emotion which was born in the period between the Renaissance and the Baroque.
