exhibition catalog for SF Camerawork
essay by Abby Chen

From the introduction by SF Camerawork director Heather Snider:
This catalog and the exhibition bring together three distinctive photographic projects consisting of either abandoned or neglected photographs gleaned by artist-curators with varied relationships to their source material. All three projects reflect the shifting parameters of the Chinese experience amid the global trend of rapid urbanization and cultural expansion in the early 21st century. The title, Retrieved, refers to the retrieval process shared by the three constructed archives and recognizes the intentionally artistic gesture of retrieving images as a creative photographic mode in itself. The work presented here and displayed across exhibition spaces at both the Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco and SF Camerawork includes distinct and complementary iterations of projects by Kurt Tong and Daniel Traub and Thomas Sauvin’s Beijing Silvermine.
