Exhibition catalogue for the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
Essays by Lauren Palmor

From Lauren Palmor's introduction:
The Bernard and Barbro Osher Collection of American Art is one of the most distinctive of its kind and certainly one of the greatest such private collections in the western United States. Reflecting the breadth of America’s artistic and cultural heritage and encompassing a broad spectrum of stories and perspectives, the expansive scope of the collection is unified by a number of overarching themes that weave rich histories about the evolution of American art. Guided by personal taste and an organic approach to collecting that freely integrates many styles and subjects, the Oshers collected a wide range of artwork: from sensitive portraits and detailed genre scenes to tranquil landscapes and meditative seascapes. The collection features a wealth of motifs and influences which, when viewed as a whole, remind us that beauty is a concept as vast and varied as the artistic imagination itself.
