from Abigail Lapin Dardashti’s essay:
“LISTEN,” monumental letters mirroring the sky tell us from the top of a green hill. “SHHH,” a floating, bedazzled phrase commands from a bucolic lake. In the absence of visitors, these guidelines of silence and observation can evoke different circumstances, including the process of clandestine migration on land and through bodies of water. The letters’ shifting visibility, either chameleon-like in relationship to the landscape or, the opposite, golden and shiny on top of the water, resonate with the necessity of migrants hiding and resurfacing both during travel and once settled because of the United States’ condemnation of undocumentedness and migrants seeking refuge.
