Essay, Close to Home, by Shannon Jackson
From Shannon Jackson’s essay:
In this project, Freeberg received permission to accompany members of a Bay Area firm who specialize in art consulting for Bay Area homes. Shadowing them as they worked, he was allowed to photograph the art advisors in the midst of client interaction and art installation.
In the Advisor series, love and money circulate and mix in expected and unexpected ways. Freeberg tells us that the homes in his photographs belong primarily to newly-minted millionaires from the Bay Area’s tech economy. These people are building new homes for new families—sometimes second homes, sometimes second families. Either way, the homes need to be filled—with pools and landscaping, with appliances and furniture, with new toys and new security cameras. And they need to be filled with art. The art advisor thus steps into this scene, providing a quick artistic education along with samples of different options and the promise of custom delivery. The Bay Area art advisor’s role is thus a variant of the global art advisory field, one targeted for families who came into wealth recently and hence need to grow a collection rapidly.
