Impulse: Works on Paper from the Logan Collection
Exhibition catalogue for the Logan Collection Vail
Essay by Kent Logan
From Kent Logan’s essay: Works on paper have always been an important part of the Logan Collection; in fact, the collection now includes over 170 pieces. Their importance to us is related to the fact that drawings often capture that first extemporaneous thought of the arts. It is a much more spontaneous action than the creation of a painting or sculpture which is a more formal exercise. The works can be figurative, abstract, narrative or conceptual; they can be preparatory sketches for larger works, or be works unto themselves, but what distinguishes them is that they more clearly capture the creative impulse of the artistic process. In a broad sense, the Logan Collection is a collection of ideas and themes. And while any art collection is by definition a collection of objects which have their own intrinsic individual artistic importance, our objective has been to create a body of works which first reflect in a visual sense many of the important issues facing society in the last half of the 20th century, and second, set the stage for the continued exploration of those themes in the new millennium.
