Jasmin Sian: a forest for Fennel
Catalog designed for Anthony Meier
Introduction by Mary Schneider Enriquez
from the introduction:
Experiencing her works necessitates close and deliberate looking. The diminutive scale of the objects, the precision of the proportions of branches and leaves to the overall tree, the fine lines of the beaks and feathers of the birds, the berries and the flower petals adorning the plants, the artist fastidiously articulated leaving nothing to chance and allowing no visual inaccuracies. Sian’s process requires her to give full, uninterrupted attention to conceiving and making the work, and sharp focus as she undertakes intricate, repeated gestures hours at a time, every day for weeks, to complete a single piece. . . .
From the beginning, Sian explained that she created these objects to commemorate her bird Fennel, and simultaneously, these works express her reverence for the natural world. Regarding these pieces, she states “This is all dedicated to nature’s champions.” ... Sian’s objects reveal her deep respect for nature’s creatures, for what she knows and what she may never see, but will always treasure. She beseeches the viewer to appreciate and care for nature, at the very least by taking time to look closely and absorb what she places before us.
