Overthrown: Clay Without Limits
Exhibition catalogue for Denver Art Museum
Volume 1 essay, Overthrown: New Turns in Contemporary Ceramics by Gwen F. Chanzit Volume 2 essay, Overthrown in Denver by Donald Kuspit
From the essay by Gwen F. Chanzit:
Clay—this most ancient material—is today still primarily thought of in terms of being tactile, expressive, malleable, hands-on, direct, and subject to impulse. As is true of most generalizations, those about clay continue to describe much of its appeal. But there is a new language of contemporary ceramics that goes well beyond the stereotype. The artists in Overthrown bring this contemporary attitude to clay. Differences are plentiful in this group of twenty five artists, yet there are commonalities. Each has a sustained commitment to the medium; they are not among the many artists today who are occasional experimenters with clay. And although some might not see themselves as particularly radical, as a group what they present will surprise even viewers who make regular rounds of ceramics exhibitions.
