From the foreword by Toto Bergamo Rossi:
It’s so very easy when you conjure up a vision of Venice to be seduced by the cliches; the tourist brochure images of gondolas and canals, of streets packed with tourists, the character-filled masked faces that are everywhere during the world-famous annual Carnival and the crowds in St Mark’s Square. And yet when you look at Rafael’s work the streets are empty, there are no gondolas or masks in sight, and the eye is left free to focus instead on the beauty of the place itself, on unexpected desolation, peace, and tranquillity.
